The robe revolution, the robe is the new garment to focus on

Quintessential homewear chic has now conquered the streets and the catwalks. The robe has long abandoned its original function, the one that elected it as the absolute protagonist of homewear, to transform itself into a stylish, urban and contemporary garment, but always marked by a “boudoir-chic” touch. What until not so many years ago was closely linked to the intimate and private dimension now proudly shows itself, among sensual softness, oriental contaminations and secret luxury to be exhibited without fear.

At one time, showing up in pajamas was not considered consonant practice, and the robe was therefore a necessary step before leaving the bedroom and going to breakfast, for example.

Sensual and enveloping, its elegance over time has been enriched by different inspirations depending on eras and influences. Exotic touches directly from countries such as China and Japan became a must have during periods of great trade with the East: a robe inspired by distant kimonos was a sophisticated garment to wear in private. And now? Many of us have inherited wonderful robes from our grandmothers’ trousseaux, and vintage stores are raging to find them, while stars such as A$AP Rocky and Kris Jenner sport them on the red carpet at the Met Gala.

Also thanks to the great return of lingerie as a trend to follow, it has led to an evolution of “robe dressing” in fashion as well. From The Attico to Antonio Marras via Tom Ford, on the runway we saw it reinterpreted in many different ways, from the most minimal to the most sumptuous and seductive. To be worn as an overcoat or as a dress, a style that expresses relaxation and languid charm, without renouncing the demands of the most hectic daily life. A classic that leaves the dimension of the home and arrives in the streets, to differentiate itself tastefully.
