At a time when fashion seems to excite us very rarely, Chanel reminds us that creativity can be alive more than ever, that inspirations can meet sales demands, and that dreaming, although it may seem an obsolete verb for these uncertain times, can be an act of courage but above all of practicality. It is all thanks to Matthieu Blazy, the creative director who, like a modern-day Charon of style, is ferrying the world’s most famous French maison toward its new course, which, it seems, is proving increasingly convincing and exciting, collection after collection.
In FW26, craftsmanship and classic silhouettes merge and mix perfectly with peaks of pop irreverence, and the new Chanel Woman becomes simultaneously self-conscious and light, fresh and impactful, sophisticated and urban, mature but with an irresistible trace of childhood, in a jolt of infectious, shimmering joy, like the luminescent textures of the looks that trod the Grand Palais runway. There are the suits, the 1920s, the jacket as a statement garment to be sported from morning to night. There are the dresses, sensual, slinky, decorated with minutiae of intent, with a naive and delicate sensuality. There are the accessories, in which Blazy confirms himself a master: Chanel bags are our new obsession, now more than ever. Thank you so much Chanel for reminding us that that wonderful, very serious game called fashion still has reason to exist.
