The numerous Oscar nominations only add to his fame and underscore his enormous talent, but Yorgos Lanthimos’ works know how to be so metaphorical and powerful at the same time that they unleash energy in every frame of his films.
From Bugonia to Poor Creatures! via Dogtooth, there has been no shortage of curiosity surrounding the director’s character-as well as his artistic partnership with Emma Stone-in recent years, including inspiration, creativity and contemporaneity.
What many people may not yet know, however, is that prior to the pursuit of evocative power, sublimation of images and conflicting emotions, Lanthimos seemed to be oriented toward a completely different career–that of basketball player.
“My father was a basketball player,” recounted the celebrated director, as reported by the BBC, “I would have been very short, I guess!” he then added, talking about the fact that, he, too, could have followed in his footsteps. Standing 1.88m tall, Lanthimos militated with Pagkrati BC in the Greek first division and, as reported by Eurohoops, played three games averaging 7 points and 5 rebounds.
Also spotted in the past on the sidelines at a Euroleague game, the screenwriter explained part of his life and work choices this way, “I decided it was not the career I wanted to pursue, basically because I didn’t think I would be as good as my father.”
