While over the years we’ve looked for trends mainly in fashion and on social media, the trend defining 2026 seems to be tied to a much more tangible need: a return to in-person experiences. The numbers speak for themselves: according to Fabrizio Larini, president of the National Association of Cinema Operators, as reported in *La Repubblica*, Italian movie theaters alone recorded a 32% increase in attendance this summer compared to 2025 and a 41% increase at the box office. July, with 7.75 million admissions, was the best month in the last thirty years, while 52 million tickets have been sold since the beginning of the year.
The season is driven primarily by blockbuster films, from Christopher Nolan’s *The Odyssey* to *Spider-Man: Brand New Day—titles designed to be seen on the big screen that seem to confirm how movie theaters are striving to reinvent themselves as an experience once again, thanks to larger screens, immersive audio, reclining seats, and premium seating options, in an effort to offer something that streaming—no matter how sophisticated—cannot replicate.
The same trend can be seen in live music events, where Milan has become one of the season’s main hubs. Between San Siro and the racetracks, major concerts have drawn over 1.5 million attendees, with 26 shows bringing artists such as Bad Bunny, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Foo Fighters, and many others to the city. According to data cited by La Repubblica, concerts at Milan’s three main venues generate economic benefits exceeding 400 million euros, including revenue from hotels, transportation, and dining.
After years of learning to watch movies, listen to music, and follow events through a personal screen, physical presence finally seems to have taken on a new value. You can watch a movie at home and listen to a song countless times, but attending a screening alongside hundreds of people or singing along with an artist in front of thousands of spectators creates a different kind of experience—one tied to the place, the moment, and above all, the sense of sharing—that lives on in conversations, comments, and memories.
