Founded in 1911, the Electric Pavilion was one of the first cinemas in England built specifically for the purpose of showing films. At risk of demolition in 1976, when thanks to a partnership it reopened as an arthouse cinema, its new name was Little Bit Ritzy, from which it also derives its current name, which sees it known more simply only as Ritzy.
In the heart of Brixton, today the cinema is a well-known and beloved cultural hub, but not only for the screening of films. In fact, on its facade it is possible to post a number of personalized messages that, over time, have served as a backdrop for the most diverse declarations of love. More than just a place to watch a movie, but a backdrop to marriage proposals and themed messages capable of making the most romantic souls dream and more.
“Couples have married inspired by their favorite films, recreating the magic of the silver screen in real life,” reports the Ritzy Cinema page in celebrating its more than 100-year history, “With its historic charm and intimate atmosphere, it has long been the perfect stage for these special moments. As we celebrate this incredible milestone, we honor not only the films that are shown, but also the lives and love stories that have come together.”
