The United States is considering approving peptides: what could change for the wellness market

Following the boom in GLP-1 drugs, the wellness world seems to have found a new obsession: peptides. While until recently they were a topic reserved for biohackers and longevity enthusiasts, today these compounds are winning over influencers, celebrity trainers, and specialized clinics, becoming one of the most talked-about trends in the health and wellness industry.

According to a report by Business of Fashion, anticipation is growing in the United States for a decision by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that could change the fate of some of the most sought-after peptides of the moment. On July 23 and 24, the FDA will meet to evaluate seven peptides that have recently become very popular and that the agency had effectively banned from the consumer market in 2023.

Approval would, in fact, pave the way for wider commercialization through compounding pharmacies and telemedicine platforms. But what exactly are peptides? They are chains of amino acids that occur naturally in the human body and are involved in numerous biological processes. In recent years, some of these compounds have attracted the attention of the wellness market thanks to their purported benefits, which range from muscle recovery to immune system support and anti-aging.

Among the most talked-about is BPC-157, nicknamed “Wolverine” online for its alleged regenerative abilities. Although it has become popular in biohacking communities, the scientific evidence supporting many of the effects attributed to these products remains limited. This is precisely one of the issues that concerns part of the medical community, and, as BoF also reports, several specialists point out that market enthusiasm is outpacing the available clinical evidence.

Despite the concerns, commercial interest continues to grow. Telemedicine companies, longevity startups, and wellness industry players are closely monitoring regulatory developments, convinced that peptides could be one of the most promising segments in the coming years.
