As the air gets milder and the days get longer, energy should soar, but instead a sweet laziness seems to take hold of us. Between yawns and naps we wish would never end, the arrival of spring often envelops us in a collective torpor in which the desire to stay in bed becomes stronger than usual.
And if we can’t always indulge it in real life, we can “settle” for still being between the sheets thanks to the many movie scenes set right in bed. Always an emblem of rest, but also of intimacy and transgression, suspended between reality and dream dimension, the bed has often been portrayed by the greatest filmmakers of all time, in different contexts but always able to remain imprinted in the viewer’s mind.
Whether it is the languid and at times unscrupulous sensuality of the great divas of yesteryear, such as Brigitte Bardot or Romy Schneider, with their naked bodies wrapped between disheveled sheets; Audrey Hepburn’s iconic night-mask outfit in Breakfast at Tiffany’s; the scenes of complicity in the great romantic comedies such as Notting Hill; or the unsolved enigmas of Eyes Wide Shut, that between cinema and bed is a fascinating and timeless pairing that allows us to enter, time after time, into the minds of the characters and, in part, into their dreams.
After all, the great purpose of cinema has always been to make us dream.
