We had definitely missed Euphoria Mondays. So much has changed since the first two seasons of the series written and directed by Sam Levinson, but one certainty remains: every beginning of the week we return to the latest episode that has just been released. Just in these hours the second episode of the already much-discussed third season has been released, marking Rosalía’s debut in her highly anticipated new role.
The teaser had already hinted that she would play a stripper, but kept her character shrouded in mystery. Now, however, the first details are starting to arrive. In scenes from the new season, Rosalía appears as Magick while working in an ambiguous nightclub called the Silver Slipper. Her character becomes fully immersed in the new narrative, where high school is now a distant memory and gives way to darker dynamics and decidedly higher stakes.
Rosalía herself has always been a fan of Euphoria: “Everything I do is because I’m a fan,” she said in an interview with the New York Times at the launch of her latest album LUX. “Some people might think, ‘Euphoria is just a pop moment.’ For me it’s different: it’s a new environment, something unprecedented. How can I deal with it while still remaining a good performer? Because being a performer on stage is very different from being a performer in a context like this, where I put myself at the service of Sam Levinson’s vision.”
Rosalía later related that Levinson was “one of the first people she wanted to let listen to the album,” adding that she reacted “in the most beautiful way…she was in tears, and that meant a lot to me because I deeply admire her vision.” Alexa Demie, who plays Maddy in Euphoria, also listened to the project and “had the same reaction.” “And I thought, maybe that means I’m on the right track,” the singer added. “Maybe it means we’re doing what we should be doing.”
In the rest of the conversation, Rosalía confirmed that she shot her scenes for Euphoria while simultaneously translating, rewriting, and composing lyrics for her ambitious new record. Calling both experiences a “challenge,” she recounted that she risked breaking down several times during the process.
“It’s a lot, and I was almost on the verge of having a mental breakdown … but I was telling myself, ‘Rosalía, if anyone can do it, it’s you.’ I kept telling myself over and over again, ‘If anyone can do it, that’s you. Keep going, keep going, keep going.” And I finally did it, and luckily I didn’t forget the lines so often.”
