Johnny Depp has always been one of the most versatile actors of his generation, capable of completely disappearing into the characters he plays and creating iconic figures that have now become part of the collective imagination. Now he’s back to surprise audiences with a new transformation: the first images from *Scrooge and the Spirits of Christmas* show the actor in the role of one of the most iconic characters in literature and cinema.
The film, set to hit theaters in November, is directed by Ti West, a filmmaker known for his visionary approach and his ability to reinterpret classic genres with a contemporary sensibility. At the heart of the story is Ebenezer Scrooge, the famous protagonist of Charles Dickens’ *A Christmas Carol*, published in 1843. A character who has become a universal symbol of greed and loneliness: a wealthy, cold-hearted man incapable of empathy, who on Christmas Eve is forced to confront his past, present, and future through encounters with three spirits.
However, the new version seems to want to look at the character from a different perspective, exploring not only the grumpy old man we all know, but also the man hidden behind the mask. “You know the name. Not the story,” reads the film’s official synopsis, suggesting a narrative capable of expanding the Scrooge legend and bringing a fresh take on the character to the screen. Produced by Emma Watts, with a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, *Scrooge and the Spirits of Christmas* boasts a cast that includes Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, and Charlie Murphy, alongside Tramell Tillman and Ian McKellen.
For Johnny Depp, this is yet another opportunity to take on a highly distinctive role, following a career built precisely on his ability to portray eccentric, dark, and unconventional characters. And from the first images, it seems that once again the actor has managed to completely transform himself, leaving room only for the character.
