Sneakers aren’t always meant to be worn. Sometimes they become a rose, other times a belt, and still other times a cardholder. It seems impossible, yet that’s exactly what Vivian Huang does—the Canadian artist who has transformed some of the most iconic sneakers into design pieces destined to win over anyone who loves sneaker culture.
Under the pseudonym Cereal Artist, Huang has built a creative universe in which the concept of upcycling takes on a completely new form. His creations are inspired by models we all know—from the PUMA Speedcat to various Nike styles—but the final result has very little to do with footwear. Petals, accessories, and pieces of furniture take shape through a process of deconstruction and reconstruction that makes each object unique.
Her story begins in Toronto with a passion that was born almost by chance. As a young girl, sneakers were simply the shoes she wore every day, but it was while working at a specialty store in 2014 that she began to see them in a new light, focusing on the materials, silhouettes, and design details. From there came first her personal collection, then the idea of transforming those icons into raw materials.
Today, Vivian Huang is considered one of the most interesting figures in contemporary upcycling. Her work has garnered millions of views on social media and caught the attention of some of the biggest names in sneakers, streetwear, and sportswear—brands she has already collaborated with over the years.
