On the extreme tip of Bari Vecchia, where the old town meets the sea, stands the archaeological area of San Pietro: an ancient place that has never stopped transforming and is now ready to give shape to a project that has gone through several difficulties over time, but is now close to completion.
This is the work of Edoardo Tresoldi, whose monumental installation gives new life to this space rich in history, interweaving memory and contemporaneity and opening a further chapter in its narrative. The installation is characterized by the now unmistakable codes of the artist, the wire mesh, and through transparencies and voids the structure merges with the landscape, becoming both monument and threshold between the physical world and metaphysical dimension, between space and time, where boundaries seem to dissolve.
Tresoldi’s dialogue with matter and landscape is particularly significant in this context: it is not just an aesthetic or poetic language, but a true tale of place, marked over the centuries by continuous transformations, stratifications and reconstructions. A territory that today welcomes an additional sign, destined to become integrated into its history.
“All these changes tell the story of the evolution of the city and the way people have lived and thought about this place. Building, destroying, rebuilding — like a breath. Layers upon Layers rooted in the same handkerchief of land that, through the centuries, in different forms, has been a house of worship, a place of rituals, a custodian of the sense of the sacred according to the city and its inhabitants. Building St. Peter’s is an act that returns and somehow asks us: who are we? What do we value? What is the sense of the sacred for us?” had written Tresoldi on Instagram at the presentation of the project.
The work, during a delicate phase of its realization, was damaged by bad weather last December 2025, making it necessary to dismantle the compromised parts and secure the construction site. A complex step, which had marked the work of the artist and the team involved, but today gives way to the conclusion of a long-awaited intervention, finally ready to be unveiled.
