That A$AP Rocky is an example of an unconventional aesthetic has long been known. His style is instantly recognizable, which, for many, has made him an icon alongside his female fashion counterpart Rihanna. It is therefore not surprising that this strong aesthetic and unbridled creativity that distinguishes him is also reflected in his design and all his artistic expressions, far beyond clothing. In fact, in 2022 A$AP Rocky launched HOMMEMADE, a design and home decor (furniture, objects, interior) studio that was born as a parallel project to his music career and his creative agency AWGE.
As reported by the official website, HOMMEMADE is a visionary design studio, furniture brand, and real estate conglomerate dedicated to transforming the way creatives interact with their environments. With a strong focus on art, innovation and functionality, the brand creates one-of-a-kind architectural spaces and homewares that stimulate the imagination and meet the needs of contemporary creatives who are always on the move. The project’s mission is to create environments that foster productivity and fuel the imagination, blending the boundaries between design and utility.
Every HOMMEMADE creation defies convention, resulting in pieces that combine form and function in what for many are considered true works of art. And it is in this vein that one of the brand’s latest creations fits. Made in collaboration with Crosby Studios, the studio led by designer Harry Nuriev, which we had already written about at Maison&Objet, A$AP Rocky signs a piece that is as provocative as it is iconic: a sofa that reproduces in every way a set of garbage bags. Titled TRASH BAG COUCH, the project takes the form of a fully functional pouf, designed and printed to mimic the appearance of urban bags. Transparent, black, red, and blue, they appear to be filled with plastic bottles, cash, candy wrappers, and anything else one would expect to find among household trash. Only when you look closely do you discover that it is a print: the effect, at first glance, is deliberately irreverent and perfectly in line with the unconventional and ironic spirit shared by both creatives, A$AP Rocky and Nuriev.
