Christopher Nolan’s record-breaking *The Odyssey*: $264 million worldwide opening

Christopher Nolan’s *The Odyssey* dominated the international box office, grossing $264.1 million in its opening weekend alone. The film grossed $124.5 million in the United States and another $139.6 million in the rest of the world, marking the best opening of the director’s entire career and the biggest debut for a live-action film in 2026.

With this result, *The Odyssey* even surpasses the opening weekends of *The Dark Knight Rises* and *Oppenheimer*, confirming the director’s ability to turn each of his new films into a cinematic event of global significance. IMAX theaters played a decisive role, generating nearly $52 million in global box office revenue on their own. IMAX is a premium film format that offers larger screens, extremely high-resolution images, and an immersive audio system, designed to maximize the visual spectacle. It is no coincidence that Nolan has been one of the leading advocates of this technology for years and chose to shoot *The Odyssey* entirely with IMAX cameras—a decision that enhances the film’s epic scale and makes the theater experience even more immersive.

Inspired by Homer’s epic poem of the same name, *The Odyssey* stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside a star-studded cast featuring Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. A star-studded cast that speaks for itself, and which has certainly helped generate interest in the film—as has the press tour, which also featured fashion moments and “Odyssey”-themed method dressing. The epic, which runs just under three hours and is rated R in the United States (restricted to unaccompanied minors), blends classical myth with the British director’s signature visual and narrative style. Early reviews, including ours, praise the protagonist’s profound humanity, which transforms a mythological figure into an extremely modern man grappling with emotions and challenges that transcend time.

As for the audience demographics, although the rating may have limited access for younger viewers, the film attracted a large audience in the 18- to 34-year-old age group. Critics praised its ambition and production values, while moviegoers awarded it a prestigious CinemaScore of “A,” indicating high audience satisfaction. With an estimated production budget of around $250 million and an additional $125 million invested in the marketing campaign, *The Odyssey* will need to maintain strong box office momentum in the coming weeks to break even. However, the opening weekend numbers bode well and suggest that the film could continue to dominate the box office, at least until the release of *Spider-Man: Brand New Day*, scheduled to hit theaters by the end of the month.
