Nostalgia for the 1990s is more alive than ever, and confirming this is the highly anticipated reboot of Baywatch, the series that aired for 11 seasons from 1989 to 2001 and was inspired by the Los Angeles County Lifeguards. The ingredients that made it iconic were simple but irresistible: the legendary cast, with names such as David Hasselhoff, Pamela Anderson, Carmen Electra, Jason Momoa, Alexandra Paul, David Charvet, Yasmine Bleeth, and Nicole Eggert, and stories capable of capturing the zeitgeist of the era, including rescues, social dramas, and the stories of youth and adults told through the eyes of the beach lifeguards at Will Rogers State Beach in Los Angeles County.
And of course, one cannot forget the most symbolic element: the iconic red, unfastened costumes, true emblems of an era and a city that is no more. But which are about to return. The new version, which has just gone into production, will feature Stephen Amell taking center stage as Hobie Buchannon, now the captain of Baywatch and son of the legendary Mitch, made famous by David Hasselhoff. Alongside him comes Jessica Belkin as Charlie Vale, the daughter Hobie never knew, determined to carry on the family legacy.
Brooks Nader plays Selene, the sharp-tongued Zuma Beach captain: excellent at her job but with very different methods from Hobie’s in saving lives. There is no shortage of callbacks to the original series: David Chokachi reprises the role of Cody Madison, manager of The Shoreline bar-and-grill and occasional lifeguard, while Noah Beck plays Luke, a young novice lifeguard, surfer and flirt, but surprisingly adept at saving lives.
The cast also includes Shay Mitchell, star of Pretty Little Liars, as Trina, a former lawyer who gave up a high-powered practice to devote herself entirely to beach rescue. Livvy Dunne, gymnast and influencer, makes her acting debut playing Grace, an enthusiastic and energetic junior lifeguard. Thaddeus LaGrone will be Brad, a former Marine returned to Venice Beach to care for his ailing father, while Yellowstone’s Hassie Harrison plays Nat, a former foster son turned Olympic athlete, the gold standard of lifeguarding and Hobie’s right-hand man.
The Baywatch reboot thus promises to bring back the atmospheres and symbols of the original series, combining nostalgia, action, and a cast capable of winning over today’s audiences, without forgetting the legendary red-suited dives that made 90s TV history.
