On May 20, 80 years ago, Cherilyn Sarkisian was born. A name that perhaps so does not bring back memories of a well-known character, but which takes on a totally different meaning when reread more simply under the pseudonym Cher.
She initially became known to the general public as part of the musical duo Sonny & Cher-which she started with her future husband Sonny Bono-she achieved her first hit in 1965 with the song I Got You Babe.
After her divorce and in the late 1970s, her career went through a less successful phase until, after studying acting, she landed a part in a film around 1982. Rediscovering herself as a dramatic actress, she won a Golden Globe in ’83 and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for Silkwood when, in 1988, she won the Academy Awards for Best Actress thanks to Moonstruck.
Coinciding with her Oscar win, Cher’s musical career also got a new lease on life, with the artist’s return to the pop charts in the late 1990s partly thanks to the unforgettable single Believe, all-today a pop culture icon.
Long raven hair and a supple body, from the very beginning of her career Cher has stood out not only for the magnetism she flaunts on stage, but also for her revolutionary style. Sequins, sparkles under the banner of 1970s disco music, but also hints of folk, denim and cowboy touches typical of the American Style, the artist has straddled the ages anticipating trends that are still as relevant today as ever. Forerunner of the nak*d dress – such as the famous one worn at the 1974 Met Gala -, it is the creative partnership with the designer of the stars Bob Mackie that gave her the definitive consecration, with irresistibly glamorous looks that have gone down in history.
Winner of an Emmy, a Grammy, and featured in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, the singer rightfully represents a timeless pop icon. A multifaceted artist capable of boldly reinventing herself over the decades, she continues to be a great inspiration to all her fans and beyond.
