A beauty look also reproposed and even accentuated in the Cruise collection presented in New York a few nights ago, but also appeared in fashion campaigns, tutorials, and influencer videos on social. Strong, smudged and seemingly messy make-up is definitely back. This comeback fits in as a reaction to the minimal, ultra-cured luxury that has dominated style and beauty in recent years, but perhaps also as a response to digital perfection fueled by technological innovation.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Indeed, artificial intelligence has become disturbingly sophisticated, to the point where it is difficult for even the most experienced to distinguish authentic content from artificial content. And with the rise of AI-generated influencers, there has been a widespread feeling of unnatural, almost inhuman perfection. Perhaps this is precisely why smudged and imperfect eye makeup looks so appealing today: it represents an authentic contrast at a time when social feeds seem increasingly constructed and filtered.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was seen on Gucci&#8217;s fall 2026 runway, but also in Charli XCX&#8217;s &#8220;Rock Music&#8221; video and in the many &#8220;trust the process&#8221; TikToks, in which creators and make-up artists deliberately apply makeup in a chaotic manner. It is a look that is appreciated not only because it is more accessible and replicable, but more importantly because it is perceived as genuine. In an in-depth article published by <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/beauty-industry-news\/color-cosmetics\/smudged-messy-eye-makeup-1238958281\/\">WWD,<\/a> several make-up artists expressed their views on the phenomenon. For journalist and beauty expert Kristina Rodulfo, smudged eye makeup has become a symbol of a specific cultural reaction: &#8220;There are now AI-created beauty influencers with disturbingly smooth, flawless skin and computer-generated makeup. The imperfection of crumbling mascara or eyeliner that looks like it was left on after a night out is human. It is cathartic.&#8221;   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Added to this is the aforementioned saturation toward the &#8220;clean girl&#8221; aesthetic that has been dominant in recent years. Rodulfo argues that fatigue with this imagery-often criticized partly because it is exclusive or culturally appropriative-is pushing the public toward its opposite: something dirtier, spontaneous and imperfect. Even make-up artist Mitch Yoshida agrees: &#8220;People are getting tired of makeup that looks too controlled. Smudged eyes bring back emotion, movement and unpredictability. They look more lived-in and personal, almost as if the makeup is telling a story instead of just existing for the camera.&#8221;  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No one embodies this after-party aesthetic of lived-in make-up, grunge sensuality, and glamorous mayhem better than Charli XCX. Her music, which exploded for good in the post-pandemic era, transformed the mess into an aesthetic and cultural language. &#8220;People want to have fun, sweat, and see mascara run,&#8221; Rodulfo further explains. &#8220;Disheveled makeup represents the idea of going out at night, which for people who spent their teens or early twenties in lockdown has become almost aspirational.&#8221; Add to that the return of the indie sleaze aesthetic and the current political and cultural climate, which fuels a certain nostalgia for Obama-era optimism. A perfect mix for this look to come back to appeal especially to teens and 20-somethings. &#8220;For Gen Z and Gen Alpha, who grew up during the Trump presidencies and in front of screens, there is a nostalgia for a &#8216;before&#8217; they didn&#8217;t really experience. The glam-grunge and sensual make-up represents that era. And then there is the nihilism of Gen Z: the feeling that nothing really matters in the current chaos, so you might as well party and get your makeup dirty while the world burns.&#8221;      <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those who want to replicate this look, Yoshida recommends creamy textures that are easy to blend: &#8220;Creamier products work best because they move naturally throughout the day. I apply them on the eye area and then blend them outward with my fingers or a small brush.&#8221; The make-up artist is a fan of MAC Cosmetics&#8217; Pro Longwear Paint Pot and Makeup by Mario&#8217;s Master Mattes Long-wear Cream Eyeshadow. But beyond products, the real secret is not to control the result too much: go for instinct, spontaneity and imperfection. &#8220;The key is to avoid looking too intentional: leaving some irregularities makes it more believable.&#8221;   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the question arises: is this new obsession with spontaneity and freedom really genuine, or is it simply a different-and perhaps even more sophisticated-form of aesthetic control?
