As anticipated in the numerous articles we have devoted to the subject in recent days, anticipation is growing for the Venice Biennale, the world’s oldest and arguably most influential contemporary art exhibition, which returns this spring with its 61st edition in a climate that is anything but relaxed. Amid renewed calls to exclude Israel, controversy over Russia’s participation, the – in many ways sterile – debate over the alleged absence of Italian artists and the case of Australian artist Khaled Sabsabi, who was initially excluded and then reinstated, the approach to the event is marked by tension and controversy. Yet, art history proves it: art does not back down, it responds. Against this politically heated backdrop, Venice once again takes shape as a global stage, capable of welcoming artists from different backgrounds, disciplines and geographies. Alongside established figures and true pillars of the contemporary scene, such as Marina Abramovi\u0107, a new generation of voices is appearing. Koyo Kouoh’s curatorial direction, as already anticipated, decisively privileges black and indigenous artists and perspectives long considered “peripheral” by the Western gaze. Scheduled from May 9 to Nov. 22, the Biennial thus presents itself as a broad, layered and deeply contemporary panorama. With this in mind, it seems particularly significant to us to dwell on the work of women artists, to offer a different and necessary look. Below is our selection. <\/p>\n\n
