The double move announced by Kering with the markets closed, with the usual understatement that often accompanies the most radical choices, marks a watershed in the French group’s reading, but it is still not enough to really heat up the market. There are two pieces of news: on the one hand, the conglomerate unveiled the creation of an autonomous division, Kering jewelry, which under the leadership of veteran Jean-Marc Duplaix, the group’s former chief operating officer, brings together Boucheron, Pomellato, Dodo, and Qeelin. On the other, Kering announced its decision to stop reporting on individual brands, leaving Gucci as the only maison still explicit and amalgamating the rest of the business into four large blocks: Fashion & Leather Goods, Kering jewelry, Kering Eyewear and Corporate & other, which will include Ginori 1753. It is a breakthrough in terms of reporting, but also a statement. And it already bears the mark of new ceo Luca de Meo.

From a first reading, the comparison is almost inevitable. Kering is increasingly winking at the LVMH model. For years, the Pinault family group has offered the market an almost didactic transparency on individual brands, exposing quarter after quarter the performance of its maisons, from Gucci to Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta, while only amalgamating the results of brands such as Balenciaga, Alexander McQueen and Brioni.

Instead, Lvmh has always done the opposite: Bernard Arnault has been communicating for decades by large divisions, especially in the crucial Fashion & leather goods segment, leaving individual brands with only episodic openings, often communicated verbally at shareholder meetings. A model of selective opacity that the market has learned to accept because it is backed by results, margins, and leadership, and which will return to the center of the Parisian giant’s annual shareholders’ meeting on April 23.

This is where the comparison gets interesting. Because when Arnault protects the numbers of his maisons, the market reads power. When Kering chooses to do the same, in the midst of turnaround, the risk is that it will be read as a need for hedging. And this is because, as we know, Kering comes from a period of great difficulty. It is therefore an issue of timing, rather than an issue of actual choice. Kering comes to this move after a 2025 closed with revenues at €14.6 billion, down 13 percent reported and 10 percent like-for-like, and recurring operating profit down to €1.63 billion. Numbers that tell of a group still rebuilding, despite sequential improvement in the second half of the year.

The Kering Jewelry division, on an industrial level, is hard to argue with. Jewelry is the category that shows the most resilience at this stage of luxury, with more defensive dynamics than fashion and a resilience closer to the hard luxury champions. Lvmh itself in 2025 benefited from good resilience in the Watches & jewelry segment, while the Fashion & leather goods division showed more mixed signals. For Kering, however, jewelry still represents a small segment: Strategically sensible, narratively strong, but not yet relevant enough to change the earnings profile on its own.

Regarding the stock market’s response, there is no unbalance yet: the market, at least for now, remains lukewarm to the news from Kering. On Tuesday morning, the stock traveled down about 1.7 percentage points. Investors may for now appreciate ceo de Meo’s design, with more order, more discipline, less dispersion, and less media exposure of frailties, but they are still asking to see the income statement of the transformation, a step oche takes time. For its part, Kering is asking the market for an act of trust, to judge the structure before the results. But after years of disappointment, especially on the Gucci front, trust is no longer automatic.

The first real test will be Capital markets day on April 16 in Florence, where de Meo will have to explain why this reduced transparency is not a veil, but a new industrial grammar. And a few days later, on April 23, Arnault’s annual ritual with LVMH shareholders will arrive almost by contrast in Paris. The man who can afford not to say everything, precisely because the market continues to grant him the privilege of force because he has always done so, in fact. De Meo, on the other hand, is still in a different phase. His revolution is convincing in method, but to win the same right to selective opacity, Kering will first have to win back something much simpler and much more difficult, namely results.

MFF spoke with analysts about these news from the Kering group, and it seems that behind the reorganization of the group’s reporting would be, above all, a desire to give investments time to mature and bear fruit. “To be listed in a period of great and rapid market evolution, and in which the brands in the portfolio need to transform in a profound way, is not an easy thing,” explains Dario Minutella, partner and chief commercial officer at Acbc. “This sector has a long life cycle. The moment you want to start on a path of deep transformation, even if the ideas are crystal clear and the execution flawless, it takes time to see results, a time that the stock market does not give.” Moreover, according to the analyst, this move, far from being a simple emulation of LVMH’s reporting model, sends a business message to the industry: “Expertise synergies can create value while preserving brand identity.” Agrees another fashion & luxury industry expert who prefers to remain anonymous: “By amalgamating the results of the maisons, de Meo can give himself a little more leeway without having the spotlight on him. Gucci’s numbers will still remain under the lens of analysts, but without the spun-off results of Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta there will probably be less pressure on performance at this transformational stage.”

But there are also those who view this move less favorably. “This choice, I confess, does not excite me. Any change in the reporting system is a negative in my opinion, especially when it reduces transparency about the business,” says Luca Solca, Global Luxury Goods analyst at Bernstein, instead. “Certainly this choice eliminates the possibility of making performance comparisons over time. How do Bottega Veneta or Saint Laurent perform? From now on, we won’t know. And that seems much more important to me than knowing how eyewear or jewelry perform. The best companies do not change the reporting system except in cases of absolute exception. But I understand that in this, as in other respects, Kering is trying to emulate LVMH.”

Experts then view positively the launch of Kering Jewelry. A move, the anonymous analyst notes, “along the lines of the launch of Kering beauté, later sold to L’Oréal. Jewelry brands such as Boucheron, Pomellato, Dodo and Qeelin can perform well with the right investments; this segment tends to be solid.” Acbc’s expert agrees. “This exercise has already been done with Kering eyewear and Kering beauté. The eyewear and beauty worlds were historically a licensing business for them, which in the case of eyewear they brought back in house,” Minutella continues. “In this case, for jewelry they have instead created an aggregation hub of proprietary brands to strengthen and enhance their heritage. There is also a supply chain company, Raselli Franco group, which was taken over in December.” The expert points out that the jewelry world within the luxury sector is the product category that works best. “From a group portfolio and category exposure risk management perspective, this move makes absolute sense,” Minutella concludes. So this is a sector that, while unable to drive results on its own, should by no means be underestimated.

[📷 IPA]

The French group has announced the creation of the Kering Jewelry division and, at the same time, a new segmentation…

[20253,19939
20374,21124,20809,21123
post-110699","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-fashion","tag-kering","tag-kering-jewelry","tag-luca-de-meo","tag-lvmh

<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.0 -
