A historic residence in the heart of Tokyo, Kudan House, will be the setting April 11-29 for the first major retrospective of Martin Margiela (Leuven, 1957) in Japan. Margiela founded his eponymous brand in 1988, revolutionizing fashion with ideas of deconstructing garments and a radical rethinking of shapes, with recognizable exposed seams, irregular edges and inverted garments. <\/p>\n\n

The designer never wanted to show himself publicly, letting his creations do the talking. After 2008, the “invisible man,” who for years maintained anonymity by shifting the focus from the creator to the process left the fashion system to devote himself to the visual arts. Since then the brand has been part of OTB Group, Renzo Rosso’s Italian holding company. Margiela’s research continues to explore themes such as the body, absence, time, transformation and what is usually overlooked in the everyday. “I have always been an observer. Common objects and situations inspire me a lot. I love to show the process of craftsmanship, the beauty of the unfinished and the patina of imperfection,” he said according to MFF<\/a> reports. <\/p>\n\n

These same elements come to life in “Martin Margiela at Kudan house,” an exhibition in which everyday materials are subtly transformed into ambiguous forms that are difficult to decipher. The installation invades bedrooms, hallways and living rooms with collages, paintings, drawings, sculptures, assemblages and videos, dialoguing with the lived-in atmosphere of the mansion, built in 1927. The choice of a historic home with traces of domestic life reflects Margiela’s taste for intimacy, which leaves the works to do the talking. The ordinary becomes extraordinary thanks to the artist’s keen eye, capable of capturing often invisible details and transforming them into something to dwell on. <\/p>\n\n
