On the one hand it is encouraged, on the other judged; on the one hand it is a promise of success, on the other it is still perceived as a sign of insecurity. It is precisely in this tension that a new wave of fiction is emerging among books, movies, and TV series, where beauty stops being reassuring and begins to become disturbing. <\/p>\n\n
Films like The Substance or series like The Beauty have already shown how the desire for perfection can turn into something extreme and bordering on the grotesque, and even in literature that this reflection is taking a deeper form, so much so that it is being called by a specific name, “Goop horror.” A label that harks back to the glossy world of wellness and turns it upside down, exploring its darker side, including beauty treatments, biohacking and promises of eternal youth at expensive and above all disturbing prices. Novels like New Skin tell of clandestine procedures that spiral out of control, while The Take imagines a system in which youth becomes an asset to be sold, and Aesthetica showcases surgery capable of erasing the aesthetic past, but not without side effects. <\/p>\n\n
In recent years, aesthetic treatments have become increasingly accessible and normalized, told in a light-hearted language that brings them closer to daily routine, while they remain to all intents and purposes medical procedures. In parallel there is the increasingly interested but also contradictory public debate: there is in fact an almost obsessive curiosity about the faces of celebrities and their possible retouches, but also a strong reluctance to talk about them openly, as if it were still something to hide. This dynamic contributes to increasingly unrealistic standards, fueling a short circuit in which improving oneself is accepted, but admitting it is not. This is precisely where Goop horror becomes interesting, because it shifts the focus from the surface to deep structures: these narratives are about power, about access, about who can afford certain treatments and who ends up suffering them. Indeed, aesthetic standards continue to reflect definite patterns, and many of these stories highlight how the desire to change appearance is also linked to dynamics of social acceptance. But the most powerful theme remains, always, the fear of aging in a society that associates youth with value, visibility and even utility. <\/p>\n\n
Today there are solutions for almost everything, and it is precisely this illusion of control that makes anxiety even greater, and beauty, in this sense, becomes an investment. Making this visible through horror or satire may seem excessive, but it is perhaps the most effective way to make this visible. <\/p>\n\n
