Dyson is the company bringing this innovation to life; in Paris, it unveiled the Dyson CameraJet, the first toothbrush equipped with an AI-powered camera and designed to clean areas that traditional brushing tends to overlook. The project is the result of six years of development and much broader research conducted by the company on oral hygiene habits. The underlying idea is as simple as it is ambitious: if the spaces between teeth are among the most neglected areas during daily brushing, why not rely on technology to pinpoint them with precision?
This is where Dyson’s Gap Optical Targeting technology comes into play. Using a camera and machine learning systems, the toothbrush analyzes up to 28 images per second, recognizing interdental spaces in real time and directing a stream of mouthwash toward them. It’s not just about increasing the power of brushing, but about making the act more mindful and targeted, transforming the technology into a sort of eye capable of spotting what we normally can’t see.
“Flossing is an inconvenient and time-consuming task. Few of us do it, even though we know we should,” James Dyson, the company’s founder and chief engineer, told MFF. This led to years of research, focused not only on cleaning tools, but also on how people actually care for their mouths and the areas where food debris and plaque tend to accumulate.
The result is a device that brings together a variety of technologies: a camera, machine learning, precision fluid dynamics, advanced brushing systems, connectivity, and Wi-Fi. This collection of innovations clearly illustrates the direction Dyson has taken: taking a familiar object and rethinking it from scratch, putting technology to work for an everyday task.
